Self-catering Cottages in Ireland

Finding your ideal holiday cottage in Ireland

Before you search for your ideal holiday cottage in Ireland, we'd like you to think about it carefully first.

Cottages in Ireland can be fantastic, and we can reccommend some grea ones to you, but you should know that Irish holiday cottages are not for everyone. Before making your booking just consider the following.

1) Location, location, location
Irish Cottages were usually the homes of poor agricultural labourers, typically of 2 or 3 rooms, that housed the whole family. They were often located by the fields, close to work, rather than clustered in villages like they are in the UK. And they were not sited to get the best view.
Which means that today's Irish Holiday cottages are often well away from other houses, shops and facilities. A car is often essential. So the first consideration has to be location. Is the cottage remote, even isolated, and is that what you want? If you have kids with you, will they be happy?

2) Facilities
Of course the original cottage will have had no facilities at all - no mains water, no toilets or sewer, electricity, central heating, phone, TV or Satellite and sometimes just a footpath to access it. Today's restored Cottages will have added most (if not all) of the above. Do check what facilities are available.

3) Heating and damp
Some cottages have thatched roofs and you may think that a big thatched room will keep you warm and dry, but you could be wrong. Originally the fire of the house would have been burning all the times, keeping the interior warm, and drying out the roof and floor. But a holiday home will only be heated whilst occupied - less than half the year. That's why some cottages can feel cold and damp, smell musty, and won't warm up. Double check what heating is available, proper central heating is best, not than plug in radiators.

What else might suit you?

You are spoilt for choice. We have an abundance of well appointed, well equipped, holiday homes that are sited to enjoy the best of the views and facilities. Some are secluded, some are closer to ammenities, some are purpose built with amazing facilities, some are fantastic renovations of old houses (and cottages). Take your pick.
